W związku z tym zaplanowano i przeprowadzono badanie zatytułowane 'Badanie skuteczności porównawczej testów diagnostycznych we wczesnej diagnostyce chorób wątroby psów', którego celem była ocena częstości występowania, wzorca etiologicznego, zmian kliniczno-patologicznych i ultrasonograficznych chorób wątroby psów Stwierdzono, że gamma glutamylotransferaza była znacznie podwyższona w chorobach dróg żółciowych. Poziomy innych enzymów były podwyższone we wszystkich grupach poza fizjologicznym normalnym zakresem, ale wzrost był nieistotny, a ich wzrost nie może być skorelowany z rodzajem chorób wątroby psów. Ultrasonografia okazała się bardzo przydatna w diagnostyce chorób wątroby psów, a strategiczna interpretacja wyników może być skutecznie wykorzystana do identyfikacji choroby wątroby psów i rodzaju choroby wątroby w większości przypadków. Histopatologia wątroby jest złotym standardem w diagnostyce różnych schorzeń wątroby.
