W obliczu problemów środowiskowych związanych z utylizacją odpadów organicznych i przemysłowych, niniejsza publikacja ma na celu przegląd koncepcji i podejść związanych z tematyką rozwoju, terytorium/regionu i innowacji technologicznych oraz ich związku z wiedzą techniczną i naukową. Testy produkcji biogazu z ponownego wykorzystania odpadów organicznych z gospodarstw domowych i ciężkiej fazy gliceryny (produkt uboczny powstający podczas produkcji biodiesla) zostały przeprowadzone w laboratoriach URI na kampusie Santo Ângelo przy użyciu prototypu biodigestora opartego na odpadach. Zastosowano go na większą skalę niż dotychczas w laboratorium, wykorzystując odchody pochodzące z hodowli świń. Po analizie biogazu wytworzonego zarówno z odpadów organicznych, jak i odchodów świń, stwierdzono, że zastosowane procesy były zadowalające. Na podstawie uzyskanych wyników stwierdzono, że powstałe odpady mają właściwości, które umożliwiają ich wykorzystanie jako nawóz biologiczny.
