It is a wonderful illustrated picture book that depicts a poor Mexican girl named Yuyi and her search for a special Christmas tree. This family story discusses la Rama, a tradition that is practiced in the southern part of Mexico. Judith Mervis (Pantoja) wrote this book to entertain children and make people feel the way the book’s characters feel in their small, southern town in Mexico during Christmas time. This realistic (though fictitious) story invites us to join in on a fun adventure focusing on the Mexican tradition of singing 'la Rama,' whereby children and adults enjoy singing traditional Christmas rhymes door to door before Christmas. In this story, Yuyi decides to buy a Christmas tree after collecting money singing 'la Rama,' since her parents are too poor to afford it.
