This tale is about an impressionable gamer named Sebastian. One night, Sebastian is presented with an opportunity to live out a fantasy of murder when a gunfight happens behind his building and a man is left to die in a pool of blood with a gun in hand. At first, Sebastian intends to help the man, but he slowly descends into madness and shoots the individual with his weapon. Sebastian then explores the victims’ pockets and finds a wad of cash, so Sebastian takes the cash and the gun and returns home unseen. With the money, he hires the beautiful Elsa to have his first romantic experience at a rendezvous. Sebastian and Elsa fall in love during their first meeting and begin a personal relationship that leads to her showing Sebastian life outside his apartment by taking him to nightclubs and eating a different array of foods. Sebastian can’t believe how much his life has changed since chasing his horrific dream, but things only improve as he begins to interact with his childhood crush, Tazanna. Sebastian and Tazanna quickly fall in love as well, and though Elsa is aware, she allows the affair because of her choice of profession. Sebastian feels like the luckiest man in the world, but Detective Clancy and Detective Murdock are beginning to question him about the murder outside his apartment. Though Sebastian is no criminal and doesn’t fit a killer profile, the evidence points in his direction, and he needs to find a way to prove he is innocent, or at least beat the case.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
