This is not only a family history but also a public history that transcends individuals and families. Moreover, it serves as a chronicle of the migration and everyday lives of contemporary Shanghainese. Xu Jialiang of Guizhou: How Far is it to Shanghai?' is a biographical work about the pediatric expert Xu Jialiang. The book begins with Mr. Xu Jialiang’s personal experiences, detailing his life in various cities from birth to education, work, and daily life. It meticulously portrays Xu Jialiang’s rich life journey-from a wandering youth to a troubled prime, and from a middle-aged returnee to a twilight-filled elder. Not only did he contribute his professional expertise as a medical worker to the healthcare sector and national development, but his life also witnessed the transformations of Chinese cities and society from the early days of the People’s Republic of China to the four decades of reform and opening-up. This narrative reflects the developmental trajectories of different regions, represented by eastern coastal metropolises like Shanghai and western areas such as Guizhou, indirectly presenting the urban, social, migration, and everyday history of China since the second half of the 20th century.Xu Jialiang lived through major historical events such as the Japanese occupation of Shanghai during the War of Resistance, the public celebrations of the Republic’s founding ceremony, his assigned participation in western medical development, support for the national 'Third Front' construction, active engagement in 'reform and opening-up,' and the new era of the 21st century. Throughout his life, he grounded himself in his medical expertise, upheld an open and learning-oriented attitude in his words and actions, fulfilled his duty of healing the sick and saving lives in his ordinary medical role, and carried forward the humanitarian conscience of his family’s charitable legacy in his daily life. By doing so, he fulfilled his social responsibility as a builder, realizing both his personal life value and his public social value, thereby attaining a significance that transcends his era. In this sense, this is the story of a contemporary pediatric expert’s life choices and medical journey, one that bears witness to the development of pediatric medicine in China and the construction efforts in both eastern and western regions, while also reflecting the life trajectories of a generation of intellectuals and the transformative history of 20th-century Chinese society.《归来徐家良:贵州到上海有多远》是一本关于儿科专家徐家良的传记作品。
