Mikro-, małe i średnie przedsiębiorstwa (MMSP) stanowią ważny segment indyjskiej gospodarki, ponieważ w ciągu ostatnich pięćdziesięciu lat stworzyły więcej miejsc pracy niż inne sektory. Branże te mają wyraźną przewagę w postaci niskiej kapitałochłonności, dużego potencjału tworzenia miejsc pracy, decentralizacji bazy przemysłowej i rozproszenia przemysłu na obszary wiejskie. Rozwój MŚP pozostaje ważnym narzędziem rozwiązywania problemów ubóstwa i bezrobocia. Ich znaczenie wynika również z faktu, że odpowiadają one za około 45% całkowitej produkcji przemysłowej, 8% produktu krajowego brutto (PKB) i 40% całkowitego eksportu kraju. Sektor ten generuje możliwości zatrudnienia dla około 59 milionów osób w ponad 26 milionach zakładów w całym kraju. Ponadto odnotowuje on stale wyższy wskaźnik wzrostu niż pozostała część sektora przemysłowego. Indyjskie MŚP wytwarzają ponad 6000 produktów, od tradycyjnych po zaawansowane technologicznie. Równie istotny jest fakt, że przyczyniają się one do oszczędzania cennych walut obcych poprzez produkcję dużej liczby artykułów zastępujących import.
