Helena Tarnowicz-Barlicka urodziła się w Warszawie w 1894 r. Była jednym z ośmiorga dzieci w dużej, tradycyjnej polskiej rodzinie z wyższej klasy średniej. Wybuch pierwszej wojny światowej w 1914 r. zastał rodzinę w Moskwie, skąd - wskutek wojennej zawieruchy i wybuchu rewolucji październikowej - powrót do ojczyzny nie był dla nich możliwy aż do końca 1918 r. Helena niestrudzenie realizowała swoje marzenie o zdobyciu zawodu lekarza. Studia rozpoczęła w Moskwie, w 1917 roku, ale ukończyła je dopiero w 1925 roku. Najważniejszą osobą w jej życiu był Norbert Barlicki, prawnik i polityk Polskiej Partii Socjalistycznej (PPS), rozstrzelany przez Niemców w czasie II wojny światowej .
