Na procesy poznawcze wyższego poziomu, takie jak pamięć i przetwarzanie informacji, duży wpływ ma rozproszenie uwagi słuchowej, co stwarza trudności dla osób w różnych sytuacjach (Surprenant, 2007; Bell & Buchner, 2007). W badaniu wzięło udział 52 uczestników ze Swindon (mężczyźni = 27, kobiety = 25, w wieku 19-67 lat), (M (średnia) = 29,69, SD (odchylenie standardowe) = 12,68). W badaniu wykorzystano projekt czynnikowy 2x2, przy czym pierwszą zmienną niezależną (IV) było rozproszenie kategorii dźwięku, jego 2 poziomy to dźwięk wokalny i instrumentalny, drugi IV to znajomość wiedzy; jego 2 poziomy to normalne słowa i anagramy. Zmienną zależną (DV) były wyniki uzyskane przez uczestników w testach pamięci krótkotrwałej (STM). Wyniki wykazały nieistotną różnicę w rozproszeniu kategorii dźwięku lub interakcji między czynnikami rozproszenia kategorii dźwięku i znajomości wiedzy, ale wykazały znaczącą różnicę w znajomości wiedzy wpływającej na przetwarzanie STM, co może mieć znaczące implikacje dla społeczeństwa.
