He forms a close bond with a nurse named Sister Mary, who helps him through his recovery and encourages him to find a new purpose in life.Other characters in the book include a shell-shocked soldier named Tom, who is plagued by nightmares and flashbacks, and a young officer named Captain Miles, who is struggling with guilt over the deaths of his men.
