Abstract: Due to the recent political decisions german hospitals will share a greater part of economic responsibilities. To meet this challenge the hospitals will strive to improve workflow efficiency. Workflow management, i.e. the analysis and improvement of work processes with computational support may be one way to achieve these goals. As this has been shown to be effective in industrial surroundings, workflow management is been discussed for its possible use in clinical work as well. Here, workflow management aims at a reduction of superfluous, inefficient work, and thus the time the patient spends in the hospital. This paper describes the political and theoretical background for the implementation of a workflow management system as well as its realisation at a day care centre in an university hospital. In addition it will discuss the problems with today's workflow management systems when used in a clinical setting. Inhaltsverzeichn
