'Poisson d’or' to dzieło literackie opowiadające o walce młodej dziewczyny o emancypację. Bohaterka, Laïla, urodzona w Afryce Północnej, została skradziona, pobita i pozostawiona na wpół głucha w wieku sześciu lat. Została sprzedana Lalli Asmie, która stała się jej kochanką. Kiedy zmarła, jako mała dziewczynka bez rodziców, która właśnie straciła swoje jedyne wsparcie, babcię, była przerażona, a nawet wypędzona z domu. Nieszczęśliwe dziecko, które nie wiedziało już, co robi, Laïla uciekła, zrywając jarzmo, które wiązało ją z Zohrą, synową Lalli, która znęcała się nad nią i oskarżyła ją o to, że pozwoliła starej kobiecie umrzeć, grożąc przekazaniem jej policji. Schroniła się więc w domu tych, których nazywa 'księżniczkami' i uciekła z jedną z nich, Houriyą, do obcego kraju. Nieustannie uciekając, Laïla odkryła Francję i Stany Zjednoczone i poznała wielu ludzi, zarówno dobrych, jak i złych. Jej pragnienie wolności i determinacja, by mieć własną tożsamość, pomogą jej pokonać przeszkody i przemoc w światach, przez które przechodzi. Z pewną prostotą i płynnością. W tej powieści Le Clézio udało się dokładnie opisać krajobrazy Afryki Północnej, robotnicze dzielnice Paryża, niepokój, przemoc, rozczarowanie, a nawet marzenie kobiety. Z pieczołowitością ukazuje niezłomną determinację kobiet wobec wyzwań, które stoją na drodze do ich emancypacji.
