Woeful WisdomThis is one man’s struggle, from childhood through adulthood, unable to conquer personal problems without the aid of alcohol. Living vicariously through fictitious and real characters that his imagination thinks are colorful and becoming to his aspirations. An unreal world with real consequences, fueled by a mind altering drug. Alcohol is a drug, a deadly drug if consumed in sufficient portions or over an extended period of time. It truly is a poison. It is an unrecognizable poison due to the flowery misleading advertising and the misconstrued appearing social status when consumed by anyone with an addictive nature and personal issues to be suppressed. Woeful Wisdom is a work of fiction based on many facts of a real addiction. A Quasi autobiographical endeavor zeroing in on the addiction of alcoholism. Unfortunately, stories about addiction are a dime a dozen, often leaving out the ’human’ aspect which in turn tends to distance one’s self inclusion. This manuscript hopefully humanizes a serious problem in our society and intends to give a personal touch in order to make a lasting serious impression. It has been said that an alcoholic affects an average of seven people with his or her sickness. Of course that would increase as the size of the family increases. It isn’t too clear if education helps the problem as it is an equal opportunity disease, affecting the educated and illiterate, rich and poor alike; however, let’s keep attempting to educate with the hope it will get through to as many as possible. The non-alcoholic family member suffers greatly along with the alcoholic and in many ways lends to the alcoholic’s behavior by unwittingly enabling them. Woeful Wisdom is intended to entertain as well as educate.

Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present. Paul Keller is the Stephen Dedalus of the piece, the son of Robert and Sylvie, whose internal monologue is spliced into the action, and whose incestuous feelings for his sister lead to an increase in his...
