Skuteczna eksploatacja odnawialnych, ale nieciągłych źródeł energii, takich jak energia wiatrowa i słoneczna, wymaga niezawodnego i wydajnego magazynowania energii elektrycznej, a społeczność naukowa bada nowe urządzenia do magazynowania energii, przy czym najbardziej obiecującymi kandydatami są elektrochemiczne urządzenia do magazynowania energii. Technologie elektrochemicznego magazynowania energii obejmują baterie, ogniwa paliwowe i kondensatory elektrochemiczne. W oparciu o mechanizmy magazynowania ładunku, kondensatory można podzielić na dwie grupy: elektryczne kondensatory dwuwarstwowe (EDLC) i pseudo-kondensatory (znane również jako superkondensatory redoks i faradyczne). Superkondensatory, dzięki wielu doskonałym właściwościom, mogą częściowo lub całkowicie zastąpić tradycyjne baterie chemiczne, zwłaszcza w zastosowaniach wymagających dużej mocy. Dlatego też większość krajów rozwiniętych nie szczędzi wysiłków na rzecz badań i rozwoju superkondensatorów.
