With The Procession is a novel written by Henry Blake Fuller. The story is set in Chicago during the late 1800s and follows the lives of two young men, Ned and Tom, as they navigate their way through the city’s social hierarchy. Ned is a struggling artist who dreams of making it big in the art world, while Tom is a wealthy businessman who is more concerned with maintaining his status and wealth. As the two men come from vastly different backgrounds, they initially have little in common. However, as they become involved in the city’s social scene and attend various events and parties, they begin to develop a friendship. Along the way, they encounter a cast of colorful characters, including artists, socialites, and politicians, each with their own unique perspectives on life in Chicago. The novel explores themes of class, ambition, and the pursuit of success. It also provides a vivid portrait of Chicago during a time of rapid growth and change, capturing the city’s energy and spirit. With The Procession is a captivating read that offers a glimpse into the lives of those who lived and worked in Chicago during this exciting period in its history. When old Mr. Marshall finally took to his bed, the household viewed this action with more surprise than sympathy, and with more impatience than surprise. It seemed like the breaking down of a machine whose trustworthiness had been hitherto infallible; his family were almost forced to the acknowledgement that he was but a mere human being after all. They had enjoyed a certain intimacy with him, in lengths varying with their respective ages, but they had never made a full avowal that his being rested on any tangible physical basis. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
