Ein Windkanal ist eine spezielle Einrichtung, in der Luft mit unterschiedlichen Geschwindigkeiten über maßstabsgetreue Modelle oder tatsächliche Komponenten von Fahrzeugen, Gebäuden oder anderen Strukturen geleitet wird. Mit diesen Techniken werden Auftrieb, Luftwiderstand, Druckverteilung, Strömungsvisualisierung und aerodynamische Stabilität analysiert. Verschiedene Tunneltypen wie Unterschall-, Überschall-, Überseeschall- und Hyperschalltunnel sind für unterschiedliche Geschwindigkeitsregime geeignet. Werkzeuge wie Rauchspuren, Drucksensoren und Kraftwaagen liefern Daten für die Verfeinerung von Entwürfen, die Optimierung der Leistung und die Validierung von Berechnungsmodellen in der Luft- und Raumfahrt, im Automobilbau und in der Architektur.
