William Auld is regarded by many as the most outstanding literary luminary writing in Esperanto. His chief work is La infana raso ('The Infant Race'), a long poem of 25 chapters on the theme of 'the role of the human race in time and the universe' (The Editors). This is essentially the same theme as that of Ezra Pound’s Cantos and Pablo Naruda’s Canto General. In the present publication the translator provides versions of La infana raso in the three languages spoken in Auld’s homeland of Scotland, namely English, Scots and Gaelic.Auld was three times nominated for the Nobel Prize for Literature.

‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

Detractors have long described Scottish Gaelic as a dying language, yet there has never been as much interest shown in it as today. In print, on radio and television, Gaelic, with its vast vocabulary, has been shown to be more than adequate to express, not only the requirements of the old life of the Highlands and Islands, but also to act as a modern language for a modern worl...
