Ehe wir eIIle weitere Lebens beschreibung eines hervor­ ragenden Ingenieurs der grossen Anzahl der bereits vorhandenen anreihen, diirfte es wohl am Platze sein, in Kurzem die Griinde hier darzulegen, worauf die Hoffnung, dass ein solches Buch einige Beachtung beanspruchen diirfe, beruht. Das Interesse an dem Leben eines Ingenieurs liegt erfahrungs­ gem ass nicht nul’ in dem personlichen Charakter und den Werken des betreffenden Mannes, son del’ll ganz besonders auch in del’ Natur seiner Thatigkeit. Dies ist eine wesentliche Eigenthiim­ liGhkeit del’ Lebensbeschreibung des Ingenieurs, welche bei der Beurtheilung ihres Werthes stets VOl’ Augen schweben muss. Wenn ein thatiger Arbeiter auf einem del’ gewohnlicheren Berufspfade des Lebens sich beim Volke einen N amen erworben hat, so darf man in den meisten Fallen von vorn herein an­ nehmen, dass die Gegenstande seiner Arbeit bereits ziemlich allgemein bekannt sind und dass das Interesse lediglich von Sir William Siemens. 1 Kapitel 1.
