Wilfred Hedley: Or How Teetotalism Came To Ellensmere is a novel written by Sarah Jane Fitzgerald and published in 1884. The story is set in the small English village of Ellensmere and follows the life of a young man named Wilfred Hedley. Wilfred is a hardworking and ambitious young man who dreams of making a name for himself in the world. However, Wilfred’s plans are disrupted when a group of teetotalers, led by a local preacher, come to Ellensmere and start preaching against the evils of alcohol. Wilfred, who enjoys a drink now and then, is initially skeptical of their message. However, as he gets to know the teetotalers and learns more about the negative effects of alcohol on individuals and society, he begins to reconsider his own habits. As the story progresses, Wilfred becomes increasingly involved in the teetotalism movement and starts to work alongside the preacher and his followers to spread their message throughout the village. Along the way, he faces opposition from those who are resistant to change, but ultimately he succeeds in convincing many of his fellow villagers to give up alcohol and embrace a healthier, more productive lifestyle.Wilfred Hedley: Or How Teetotalism Came To Ellensmere is a compelling and thought-provoking novel that explores the themes of self-discovery, social change, and the power of community. Through Wilfred’s journey, readers are encouraged to consider their own attitudes towards alcohol and to reflect on the impact that their choices can have on themselves and those around them. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Stuart Evans’s first novel is a comedy-of-ill-manners set in a nouveau riche milieu: a fantastic satirical performance and hyper-referential homage to masters past and present.
