Wraz z rozwojem światowej gospodarki globalne zapotrzebowanie na energię stale rośnie. W tej kwestii odnawialne źródła energii, takie jak energia wiatrowa, wodna, fotowoltaiczna, biopaliwa i energia geotermalna, będą się szybko rozwijać, osiągając wzrost na poziomie 6,6% rocznie. Energia geotermalna jest pozyskiwana poprzez wykorzystanie ciepła ziemi i wymaga jedynie niewielkich obiektów (jeśli wykorzystuje się już istniejące odwierty przemysłu naftowego i gazowego). Ponadto wydobycie energii geotermalnej nie powoduje emisji dwutlenku węgla ani powstawania odpadów i jest niezależne od warunków pogodowych. Chociaż udział energii geotermalnej w globalnej produkcji energii elektrycznej pozostaje bardzo niewielki (0,3%), odgrywa ona znaczącą rolę w Stanach Zjednoczonych i Indonezji. Dzięki energii geotermalnej teoretycznie możliwe byłoby zaspokojenie rzeczywistego światowego zapotrzebowania na energię przez 100 000 lat. Jednak obecnie tylko niewielka część tych zasobów jest technicznie eksploatowalna. Celem tej książki jest wyjaśnienie, w jaki sposób można bardziej efektywnie wiercić w bardzo twardych formacjach.
