Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Fragt man eine Frau oder einen Mann, woher sie wissen, Mann oder Frau zu sein, löst der Fragende möglicherweise Erstaunen oder Verwunderung aus. Denn: Als Mädchen oder Junge ist der oder die Befragte zur Welt gekommen. So könnte lapidar die Antwort sein. Nach den äußeren Geschlechtsmerkmalen wird das neugeborene Wesen Mensch in weiblich oder männlich eingestuft. In sehr seltenen Fällen kommt laut Birbaumer und Schmidt (1999) das echte Zwittertum (Hermaphroditismus verus) vor, bei dem männliche und weibliche Keimdrüsen in einem Individuum vorzufinden sind. Oder: Der Vorname wird genannt, zum Beispiel Anna, Karen oder Melanie o. a. Wenn ich so heiße, werde ich als Mädchen bzw. Frau angesehen und behandelt. Als Junge bzw. Mann sieht meine Umwelt mich, falls ich einen für dieses Geschlecht üblichen Vornamen trage. Weiter erhält man vielleicht zur Antwort, man hatte für Jungen oder Mädchen typisches Spielzeug, trug blaue oder rosa Kleidung als Säugling. Bei Bancroft (1985) findet man zum Geschlecht acht verschiedene Ebenen, auf denen sich dieses manifestieren kann. Unterschieden wird die chromosomale Ebene, die Keimdrüsen, das Endokrinsystem, die inneren und äußeren Geschlechtsorgane, die sekundären Geschlechtsmerkmale, die geschlechtstypische Differenzierung des Gehirns und das Zuweisungsgeschlecht bei der Geburt. Was aber bedeutet es, eine Frau zu sein oder ein Mann? Bei anfänglichen Überlegungen kommt eine befragte Person auf den Verhaltensaspekt. Frauen und Männer handeln und verhalten sich unterschiedlich. Warum? Sie wurden unterschiedlich erzogen, lautet eine mögliche Antwort. Und weil sie als Kinder Erwachsene beobachtet haben. Ihre Eltern und andere weibliche und männliche Wesen haben ihnen vorgelebt, welche Verhaltensunterschiede zwischen den Geschlechtern bestehen.
