Według danych KDHS z lat 2008/09 statystyki dotyczące śmiertelności matek wskazują na tendencję wzrostową w okresie pięciu lat 2003/08. Kluczową strategią odwrócenia tych tendencji jest zapewnienie dostępu do wykwalifikowanej opieki w czasie ciąży. Głównym celem badania było dostarczenie informacji na temat czynników wpływających na korzystanie z usług przez matki. Przeprowadzono badanie przekrojowe wśród 208 matek, które rodziły w okresie 12 miesięcy poprzedzających badanie, z wykorzystaniem kwestionariusza wypełnianego przez ankieterów. Do określenia czynników wpływających na korzystanie z usług położniczych wykorzystano wskaźniki odpowiedzi oraz korelacje. Przeprowadzono analizy odpowiedzi, a wyniki przedstawiono w postaci częstotliwości, odsetków i średnich. Wyniki wskazują, że ubóstwo, czynniki szpitalne, dostępność środków medycznych oraz jakość leczenia i opieki odegrały istotną rolę w wyborze miejsca porodu. Zalecenia obejmują: wspieranie współpracy między tradycyjnymi położnymi a pracownikami służby zdrowia w celu stworzenia sprawnej sieci skierowań, szkolenie tradycyjnych położnych w zakresie opieki nad ciążami niskiego ryzyka oraz wzmacnianie pozycji matek pod względem społeczno-ekonomicznym.
