Beautiful DIANA, who is still a young Novitiate, is unlike the Nuns in her Irish convent. Her free spirit and love of dance cause her to be a stain on their reputation. When her superior, MOTHER THERESA, receives a letter from MAJOR JOHN MACBRIDE asking for medical aid in a growing war in South Africa, she does not hesitate to send Diana. Diana and a small group of nuns board a Red Cross Hospital ship bound for South Africa. When the ship breaks down, Diana devises a plan and finds South African Guides to lead the nuns through Africa until they reach the Vaal River to Vereeniging. From there, they take a train to Pretoria. Aboard the train, Diana sets her eyes on a handsome doctor, JUAN. Diana will be the only nun at Volks Hospital in Pretoria to assist with the patients, as she has studied nursing. Diana soon works with Juan, who provides medical support at the hospital. They begin to feel for each other, but their love is forbidden. Diana resists as long as she can, but soon it is too much to bear. They share a passionate yet tender kiss, marking the beginning of their love affair. Their affair ends in tragedy after she receives news from him. Soon, the British Army marches through the streets of South Africa in victory. Many South Africans are relieved, but later find out that concentration camps are being built across the country. Diana is stationed as a nurse in one such camp. But the British doctors and nurses do not care for the patients at the camp. Soon, Diana is kicked out of the hospital for disagreeing with their lack of medical care and is forced to live among the prisoners at the camp. However, Diana’s positive attitude improves the lives of all those she touches. The British Parliament’s debates regarding the Boer War and the concentration camps resulted in improvements at the camps and end the war. Diana is allowed passage back to her home in Ireland. But Diana decides to take a different path once she arrives home, as she takes two young Africans as her foster children.
