The poet continues to draw his imagery from his familiar surroundings, from human behavior and interaction, from key elements in nature, including the skies and water and from flora and fauna alike. The bright side of life with hope as a dominant theme is reflected throughout the poems. No matter how complex, how conflicting, how intriguing or how hostile relations may sometimes appear to be—which underlie life’s leitmotif—a strong undercurrent of love essentially drives the cadenced rhythm of the verse. The beauty of the poems derives from chiaroscuro, the literary technique of balancing shade and light, gloom and hope to achieve balance as the basis for the poems’ natural flow from a hooting dusk to a bright dawn of eternal life and human aspirations.

    Jennifer Chrystie
‘There’s a touch of both Dickinson and Larkin in Jennifer Chrystie’s mature exhumation of the tales and tropes of family. Figures who could so easily flit like phantoms in her well honed poetry are palpably enjoying an after-life in the poet’s ability to redeem through deep understanding. The collection arcs from, at one extreme, the parsimonies of the household, to the transce...

    Edward V Bonner
The very title of Edward V. Bonner's first volume of poetry, One Kiss (Ingram, 2015), suggests some ways in which the poems inside balance the universal with the particular. Most of the poems examine the themes of beauty and risk, pleasure and danger, in the context of one of three kinds of relationships: to romantic partners, to the spiritual world, and to the world of nature....

In his interpretation of Antigone, Seamus Heaney says, ‘Nobody can be sure they are always right.’ Maureen O’Shaughnessy’s The Truth about A further attends to this idea through various readings of the myth as portrayed by Sophocles, Brecht, Ted Hughes, Anne Carson and, most particularly, Euripides. • Saddle on Thunder
    Felix Bongjoh
Thunder, in general, evokes violence, but is here used as part of nature’s endowments to conjure imagery that sets forth an aspect of life, which involves deep-pitched sounds and noise. Be it part of normal life or a literally loud explosive event or related happenings, the title of this book also evokes a manner or state of mind with which to react psychologically to 'thunder'...

Light as poetically and realistically captured in its natural form from the sun, and as produced by man through electrical devices, has an impact on how individuals in society, as compared with groups, interact with each other and use it for their daily lives. Beyond light as physically manifested in transparent, plasmatic ions, there is light, an inspiration from within, that ...

  • A Storm Wave’s Reach

A storm brews gyrating downward-pulling waves in its immediate surroundings and spills drizzles that may be felt far off in or away from a ship. On a shore. In the hinterland. It captures and mimics life which is ideally lived far away from the center of turbulence. And when there’s no choice, people flee uphill to higher elevations. They flee to distant islands, to other count...

Whether we are drifting in or out of a life’s shore considered to be home, a wave ebbs away out at sea and bounces back to shore in much the same way as life does, as we travel away from o...
