Worldwide, hysterectomy is considered one of the most common gynecological surgeries in several countries. Over 500,000 hysterectomies are performed yearly in the United States, and they often result in a moderate to severe amount of pain. Hysterectomy is generally a safe procedure, but with any major surgery comes the risk of surgical and post-surgical complications. Although hysterectomy is associated with fewer complications than many other major operations, risks and complications depend upon the type of hysterectomy performed, the individual woman’s health status, and the surgeon’s expertise and experience. Nurses play an important role as a health educator and counselor for women, the nurse can minimize the complications that can occur during postpartum pain management as well as long-term complications.
