Westward Ho! is a historical novel written by James Kirke Paulding. The story is set in the early 17th century and follows the adventures of a group of English settlers who journey to the New World in search of wealth and opportunity. The main character, Captain John Smith, leads the group as they face numerous obstacles and challenges along the way, including hostile Native American tribes, harsh weather conditions, and treacherous seas.Throughout the novel, Paulding explores the themes of bravery, perseverance, and the pursuit of the American Dream. He also provides a vivid depiction of life in the early colonies, including the struggles and triumphs of the settlers as they establish their new homes and communities.Westward Ho! is a classic work of American literature that has been widely read and studied for over a century. It is a thrilling adventure story that offers a glimpse into a pivotal moment in American history and the brave men and women who helped shape the nation. The dismal cry of ''Fire!'' from a single hoarse voice at once conveyed to his mind the natural solution of the threatening omen. In an instant he was in the grass-grown street which divided the village, and at the same moment saw the flames breaking out from the roof of Colonel Dangerfield’s mansion, which, being built of pinewood, burnt almost with the rapidity of tinder. Not a soul was stirring as yet but himself and the person who had given the alarm, and from the total silence within, it was evident that none of the family were as yet awakened. Rainsford’s first impulse was to knock violently at the door and call aloud. But it would seem that we miserable short-sighted mortals never sleep so sound as when the thief is abroad or the house on fire. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
