The story began with my father. Or rather, not exactly with him-'a chance karmic encounter' would be a more fitting way to describe it.Back then, my father was only eighteen or nineteen years old. After graduating from high school, he failed the entrance exam to an art college by half a point in the talent test, despite scoring a full extra point in academic subjects. Left with no other choice, he had to set aside his dream of becoming a painter and enlisted in the army instead. After nearly half a year in service, in the middle of July during the height of summer, his unit granted him a few days of leave to visit home. The military camp was located far away, deep in a remote mountainous forest. To get home, my father had to take a long-distance coach bus. And it was from that seemingly ordinary bus trip that he would later, unknowingly, help save our entire family from a horrifying catastrophe. Perhaps it truly was destiny at work. The bus stopped for a short break along a desolate mountain road. My father got off to relieve himself behind a large rock, where thick bushes grew densely. As he was returning to the bus, he suddenly noticed a small yellow-furred dog emerging from the overgrown weeds nearby. There would have been nothing unusual about it-if the dog hadn’t started following him.At first, my father paid it no mind. But after walking for a while, the little dog was still trotting behind him, wagging its tail cheerfully and acting extremely friendly. Feeling puzzled, my father stopped and looked around, trying to see who the dog belonged to. Yet all he could see were barren hills and dense wild vegetation. In the distance lay a bleak graveyard, scattered with a few lonely tombs and burial mounds. There wasn’t a single house or sign of human habitation in sight.
