Seither wurden in der Parodontologie verschiedene Laser wie CO2, Nd:YAG, ER:YAG, Cr:YSGG usw. eingesetzt. In jüngster Zeit wurde der Diodenlaser (GaAlAs) bei der Behandlung der chronischen Parodontitis eingesetzt. Einer der Vorteile von Diodenlasern im Vergleich zu anderen Lasersystemen, der mit bloßem Auge sofort erkennbar ist, ist ihre Größe. Durch die Entwicklung von Diodenzellen mit Mikrostruktur, die in der Lage sind, Laserlicht zu emittieren, konnte die Größe der Lasersysteme drastisch reduziert werden. Diodenlaser haben eine kürettende und biostimulierende Wirkung. Dadurch wird das infizierte Sulkusepithel vollständig entfernt, ohne das darunter liegende Bindegewebe zu schädigen und die Bakterienlast zu verringern, die leicht in das Sulkusepithel eindringen. Ziel der vorliegenden Studie war es also, die Wirksamkeit des Diodenlasers (940 nm) als Ergänzung zur nicht-chirurgischen Parodontaltherapie bei der Behandlung von Patienten mit chronischer Parodontitis zu bewerten und zu vergleichen.
