This book is the result of a master’s thesis that investigated the fortunes of the inhabitants of Vila de Castro, located in Campos Gerais do Paraná, in the first half of the 19th century. The research was based on 150 post-mortem inventories (109 of which belonged to slave owners), opened in the village between 1820 and 1844. Its pages paint a picture of the Campos Gerais region of Paraná, tracing the paths of troops and the housing of the population around the village of Castro, and reveal, through an analysis of material life, the daily routine of a slave-owning society. The analysis of the post-mortem inventories provides surprising data on the inventoried assets and wealth of the locality. Thus, this book is of interest to both historians and others who wish to gain insight into the daily life of military societies in the 1800s.
