'We are Drunk and Broken, and No One Is Witnessing Us' is a social thriller by Mahdi Ganjavi that intertwines the past and present of a group of intoxicated and broken individuals in Iran during the 2000s and earlier. Each of them has carried out actions in solitude. Every event and place holds its own history, slowly unveiled by ostracized narrators, as a thin trail of blood connects each narrator to their tale. Mahdi Ganjavi is a writer, editor and distinguished historian specializing in education, literature, print, and translation within the Middle East. He has written the entry on 'Bijan Elahi' for the Encyclopaedia Iranica, and his articles have been published in journals such as Iranian Studies and the Review of Middle East Studies. Over the last decade, he has undertaken the editing and publication of seven lesser-known Persian novels dating from the 1920s to the 1940s. These novels provide valuable insights into the origins of historical and utopian fiction, science fiction, and detective fiction within the Persian literary tradition. Recently, Ganjavi has successfully completed the first critical edition of 'Henriyah Translation' (tarjumah hinrīyah), which represents the earliest Persian translation of 'One Thousand and One Nights' (Maniahonar, 2022). Ganjavi’s first short story collection, The Pedagogy of Paranoia, was published in 2012 by Roozbahani Press. His second work of fiction, Expectations of A Dream, a collection of 79 flash fiction stories, was published in 2021 by Asemana Books (Toronto). We Are Drunk and Broken, and No One Is Witnessing Us is Ganjavi’s debut novel.
