Dieses Sonderheft der Österreichischen Zeitschrift für Soziologie (ÖZS) regt dazu an, darüber nachzudenken, was die migrationssoziologische Forschung nicht weiß.  Dabei geht es nicht nur im herkömmlichen Sinn um den Aufweis von Forschungslücken. Ziel der einzelnen Beiträge ist es vielmehr, die durch die Migrationsforschung selbst generierten blinden Flecken herauszuarbeiten. Drei Problembereiche sind es, die in den Aufsätzen aus unterschiedlichem Blickwinkel und unter Bezugnahme auf aktuelle Forschungsarbeiten aufgearbeitet und diskutiert werden: Zum einen die immer wieder ungenügende gesellschaftstheoretische Rückbindung von Gegenstandsbenennung, Begrifflichkeit und Hypothesenbildung, was die Migrationsforschung in eine Sackgasse manövriert.  Zum zweiten die problematische, weil häufig auf mehr oder weniger impliziten heuristischen Vorannahmen beruhende Verwendung empirischer Kategorien. Zum dritten der selten systematisch untersuchte Beitrag der Forschung zur Produktion gesellschaftlicher (Un-)Sichtbarkeit. Es sind dies Schlüsselfragen der aktuellen soziologischen Migrationsforschung.
