Diese Sonderausgabe zweier von mir zuerst in den N atur­ wissenschaften (12. J ahrgang, 1924) ver6ffentlichten Aufsatze ver­ dankt ihre Entstehung einer Anregung von Herrn Dr. BERLINER, des verdienten Herausgebers jener den Kontakt zwischen allen Naturwissenschaften aufrechterhaltenden Zeitschrift. Sie sind hier durch einige Zusatze im Text und angefiigte Erlauterungen erganzt worden. UrspriingIich hervorgegangen aus meiner Be­ schaftigung mit der Relativitatstheorie, wenden sie sich an einen breiteren Kreis als die systematische Darstellung in dem Buche 'Raum Zeit Materie' (5. Auf!., Berlin: Julius Springer 1923): sie sollen Botendienste tun von der Physik zu den iibrigen Natur­ wissenschaften, vor all em aber von der Physik zur Philosophie. Es liegt ihnen die Tendenz zugrunde, die physikalische Erkenntnis philosophisch ernst zu nehmen, wie es DESCARTES oder KANT getan haben. Zwar m6gen bei der groBen methodischen Geschlossenheit der gegenwartigen Physik die hier er6rterten Fragen fiir sie seIber nur von sekundarem Belang sein; sie wirken weniger in die Physik hinein als aus der Physik heraus auf das Bild des Kosmos, das in unser gesamtes geistiges Leben eingeht. - Ein Bedenken kann ich nicht verschweigen: es ist vielleicht gerade heute besonders verfriiht, iiber das Wesen der Materie zu reden, wo die Quantentheorie, von welcher wir entscheidende Auf­ klarung erhoffen, zwar die physikalische Forschungsarbeit be­ herrscht, aber ihr Geheimnis noch immer in fest verschlossener Schale halt.
