David Tran was a young man serving his country of Vietnam as part of the Army of the Republic of Viet Nam. He was married to Anna and they were awaiting the birth of their first child. Yet their plans for the future were suddenly cut short when the North Vietnamese Army captured David and Anna on March 20, 1975, during the final days of the Vietnam War. Those heart-pounding moments of capture, and what transpired afterwards, are among the memorable aspects of David’s newly published memoir, Warning Shots: Memoirs of a Sinner Saved by Grace. Before the Vietnam War changed his life dramatically, David remembers the good times of his life growing up in Vietnam among his siblings and several family members. He dealt with some serious health issues while growing up, but was determined to complete his education in order to get into college and become a doctor. Investing instead in a career in pharmacy, his career plans were changed with the escalation of the Vietnam War in 1968, leading to David to join the Army of the Republic of Viet Nam (ARVN). He began to acclimate to military life and then met Anna, marrying her and beginning a family as he continued his army service. Yet nothing could prepare for being captured and placed in concentration camps by the North Vietnamese Army. Although Anna was quickly released after her capture, David remained a prisoner for three years after the end of the war. Soon after being reunited, David, Anna and their growing family fled their homeland by boat to Malaysia and resettled in the United States, and David made the ultimate decision to receive Jesus Christ as his Savior and embrace the Christian faith. Looking back over his life, David sees that God had a hand over all his life and Warning Shots is a celebration of the life God spared and redeemed to new life.
