Grace McDougall was 28 years old when she went to the Great War. Already a leader of the FANY Corps, she crossed the Channel alone in 1914 and forged a path for other women to join her, driving ambulances at the front lines and nursing wounded men. By the time the war ended she had also shelled the enemy, escaped being a prisoner of war, been decorated for bravery, befriended the Queen of Belgium and become the first bride in khaki. This is the remarkable story of Grace’s war, told by her youngest son.
