Znaczna część historii Stanów Zjednoczonych wiąże się z wyzyskiem „innych'. Przez wieki siła robocza Afroamerykanów była rażąco nadużywana i wykorzystywana do budowy „wielkiego białego narodu' Ameryki. Od czasów niewolnictwa, poprzez okres po zniesieniu niewolnictwa, aż do XX wieku Afroamerykanie borykali się z powszechnym rasizmem i dyskryminacją, w tym segregacją, pozbawianiem praw wyborczych, linczami oraz nierównościami w dostępie do mieszkań, opieki zdrowotnej, miejsc pracy i wynagrodzeń. Niemniej jednak przez te wszystkie lata trwała długa historia protestów czarnych, mających na celu między innymi osiągnięcie pełnej wolności i samostanowienia. Pomimo poważnych wyzwań związanych z ich integracją przez kilka dziesięcioleci, organizowanie się czarnych pracowników okazało się użyteczną drogą do walki z poniżaniem opartym na rasie. W niniejszym opracowaniu termin „organizowanie się pracowników w ramach ruchu na rzecz praw obywatelskich' oznacza zbiorowe wysiłki czarnych pracowników na rzecz poprawy warunków pracy i uzyskania gwarantowanych praw wynikających z obywatelstwa amerykańskiego.
