In diesem Buch werden die Herausforderungen und Planungsprobleme untersucht, die sich aus dem Wachstum der informellen Siedlungen im Großraum Karu (Greater Karu Urban Area, GKUA) ergeben. Die Bevölkerung des Gebiets wächst Schätzungen zufolge jährlich um etwa 44 %. Diese Wachstumsrate hat die Planungsbehörden und die Regierung des Bundesstaates Nasarawa völlig überfordert, sie zu bewältigen. Im Rahmen dieser Untersuchung wurden zwei Arten von informellen Siedlungen in dem Gebiet identifiziert: die inneren Kernslums und die stadtnahen gemischten Dichte-/Slumgebiete. Verschiedene (interne und externe) Wachstumstreiber sind für das Wachstum und die Entwicklung dieser Gebiete verantwortlich, die verschiedene Herausforderungen und Probleme (mit unterschiedlichem Schweregrad) mit sich bringen. Um die planerischen Herausforderungen und Probleme der Siedlungen zu bewältigen, sind integrativere und armutsorientierte Stadtplanungs- und Verwaltungsstrategien erforderlich.
