O trabalho a seguir trata, em primeiro lugar, das alterações climáticas em geral, da sua evolução nas próximas décadas e dos potenciais impactos no nosso habitat. Em seguida, define-se o conceito de vulnerabilidade e analisa-se mais detalhadamente as suas diferentes formas e manifestações. Além disso, examinam-se as vulnerabilidades gerais na Alemanha em relação às alterações climáticas, bem como as vulnerabilidades de formas específicas de paisagem, setores socioeconómicos e outras áreas. Estas foram selecionadas com base no relatório sobre alterações climáticas da Agência Federal Alemã para o Ambiente (Zebisch et al. 2005) e complementadas por algumas categorias do relatório Climate change, impacts and vulnerability in Europe 2012 da Agência Europeia do Ambiente. Por fim, são apresentadas e discutidas estratégias de adaptação essenciais e desenvolvimentos futuros para lidar com as alterações climáticas.
