L’uso di carichi non lineari a livello di utente finale sotto forma di convertitori elettronici di potenza, UPS, forni elettrici ad arco e il crescente utilizzo di azionamenti a velocità variabile sta aumentando di giorno in giorno. La maggior parte dei problemi di inquinamento causati dal sistema elettrico è dovuta alla natura non lineare dei carichi, che immettono armoniche nella fonte. Per superare questo problema, l’APF (filtro di potenza attiva) ha guadagnato maggiore attenzione grazie alle sue eccellenti prestazioni di mitigazione delle armoniche. La teoria della potenza reattiva istantanea (IRP), nota anche come teoria p-q, può essere utilizzata per derivare un algoritmo di controllo per VSC trifase a 3 fili e trifase a 4 fili per mitigare le correnti armoniche in condizioni di carico non lineare sbilanciato e non bilanciato. Il VSC trifase a 3 fili è la soluzione più economica, ma presenta alcuni svantaggi. La mancanza di un filo neutro nel VSC trifase a 3 fili comporta maggiori perdite del filtro e quindi una riduzione dell’efficienza. Due tecniche di controllo, ovvero il controllo della corrente a banda di isteresi e il PWM basato sul vettore, sono implementate per tre diverse condizioni di carico. In entrambi i casi, la % THD è stata ridotta secondo gli standard IEEE 519. La riduzione delle armoniche è migliore nel caso del metodo di controllo della corrente a isteresi, poiché richiede solo un valore di larghezza di banda.
