In diesem Buch wird untersucht, ob die Verwendung von Diagrammen und technischen Analysen zur Ermittlung von Trends bei künftigen Devisenmarktpreisen effektiv ist. Im ersten Teil der Analyse wurden die täglichen Devisenkassakurse der USA und Großbritanniens mit STATA verarbeitet. Dann wurde die Handelsregel des gleitenden Durchschnitts für die drei Teilperioden von 1980 bis 2015 angewendet. Es wurde festgestellt, dass in Perioden mit extremeren Werten und Schwankungen (höhere Kurtosis) die Regel des längeren gleitenden Durchschnitts die beste Option ist, während umgekehrt in Perioden mit geringerer Kurtosis die Regel des kürzeren gleitenden Durchschnitts in Betracht gezogen werden sollte. Ohne Transaktionskosten oder Risikoanpassungen war die kumulierte Durchschnittsrendite der Strategien unter allen Handelsregeln für den Zeitraum 1980-1990 deutlich positiv. Während die Technik des gleitenden Durchschnitts weiterhin positiv war, lag sie für die beiden anderen Stichprobenzeiträume von 1990 bis 2000 und für den jüngeren Zeitraum von 2005 bis 2015 näher bei Null. Darüber hinaus wurde in diesem Buch das Kopf-Schulter-Chartmuster analysiert, das sich für den Handel auf dem Devisenmarkt als unwirksam erwies.
