Zu Beginn der 2000er-Jahre wurde für die sSchweizerische Gassenarbeit eine Phase der Neuorientierung diagnostiziert, die aber bislang kaum analytisch reflektiert wurde. War Gassenarbeit früher stark an einer parteilichen Ausrichtung und der Lebenswelt ihrer Zielgruppen - der Gasse - orientiert, wird heute vor allem öffentlicher Raum als Bezugspunkt gesetzt. Wie sich die sozialarbeiterische Praxis im Anschluss an die Phase der Neuorientierung gestaltet, bleibt bislang ebenso offen wie der Stellenwert von öffentlichem Raum im Kontext dieser Praxis. Anhand zweier kontrastierender Teams wird deutlich, dass sich Gassenarbeit mittlerweile zwischen Bewirtschaftung des öffentlichen Raums und Lobbyarbeit in der Stadtentwicklung bewegt.
