Der Begriff Sozialversicherung im engeren Sinne beschreibt ein öffentliches System von Pflichtversicherungen. Sie ist gegliedert in fünf verschiedene Versicherungszweige: die Krankenversicherung, die Rentenversicherung, die Unfallversicherung, die Arbeitslosenversicherung sowie die Pflegeversicherung. Dieses umfassende System der sozialen Sicherung, wie es heute besteht, entwickelte sich jedoch erst nach und nach im Verlaufe des von unterschiedlichen politischen, wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Verhältnissen geprägten Deutschland des ausgehenden 19. und des 20.Jahrhunderts und kann nur vor diesem Hintergrund verstanden werden. Gegenstand der vorliegenden Seminararbeit ist die Darstellung der geschichtlichen Entwicklung der Sozialversicherungsgesetzgebung und der dahinter stehenden politischen Motive, die mit der wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Entwicklung in Deutschland untrennbar verbunden sind. Die Geschichte der Sozialversicherung wird daher in chronologischer Form - gegliedert nach den einzelnen Epochen der deutschen Geschichte - wiedergegeben. Zunächst werden im ersten Kapitel die Gründe für die Entstehung der Sozialversicherung in Deutschland im 19. Jahrhundert erläutert. Das zweite Kapitel geht auf ihre Anfänge im wilhelminischen Kaiserreich der achtziger Jahre des 19. Jahrhunderts und ihre Entwicklung bis zum Ende des Ersten Weltkrieges ein. Im Blickpunkt des dritten Kapitels stehen die Veränderungen in der Zeit der Weimarer Republik und des Dritten Reiches. Abschließend wird im vierten Kapitel die Weiterentwicklung der Sozialversicher
