- The long expedition’s spiritual pendulum had gained momentum well before the earthquakes. -The first of the three devastating earthquakes struck the central Mississippi Valley of North America, cataclysmically wreaking havoc on the Mississippi River basin. The 1811 temblor was unprecedented for that area, and it took place mere hours after Lorna and Jack’s fairy-tale wedding. In the aftermath of the initial destruction, Jack crawled part of the way down a rockslide looking for survivors before an aftershock sent him tumbling toward the riverbed. He gathered his wits and spied an overhang that could have sheltered survivors. He approached on his haunches, listening and looking for any signs of life. He didn’t see anything, but he caught a faint odor of smoke and followed the smell to a sizeable rift in the large slab. Once there, he saw a thin cloud of smoke floating up, and he called out to Lorna, 'I see smoke!' Then he shouted into the crevasse, 'Hello, can anyone hear me? Anyone there? Hello down there? Hello. . . .' - He put his ear to the opening and heard the faint cry of an infant in the depths. --A 'Leave It to Beaver' era kid from up north, near the Oklahoma border, Glenda Simpson grew up with her younger sister and her parents who thought life should be one long adventure. She is a news junky and likes to be well informed on current affairs. She attended Abilene Christian College before marrying and becoming a mother of two children. Her favorite author is James Michener, who introduced the world to her in full color. Her novel, Cheatiebo, the Folklorist, is her top bucket list item and possibly her swan song performance. Writing has always been gratifying to Glenda, and she feels that God has richly blessed her earthly sojourn.- He put his ear to the opening and heard the faint cry of an infant in the depths. ---ABOUT THE AUTHOR: A 'Leave It to Beaver' era kid from up north, near the Oklahoma border, Glenda Simpson grew up with her younger sister and her parents who thought life should be one long adventure.
