This book is about the early stages of the rebirth of a new Russian empire from the former Soviet Union. It argues that Russia’s recent aggressive actions and foreign policy doctrines have signaled a renewal of the Cold War, or at least have established the potential for renewal, and explains these developments in a historical context while focusing on Vladimir Putin’s role in them. It provides a nuanced understanding of how Russia arrived at its current position through recent and distant internal and international events.
