Violet Davenant: Or The Blood-Marked Hand! is a novel written by Bayle St. John and originally published in 1859. The story revolves around the titular character, Violet Davenant, who is born with a mysterious mark on her hand that is said to be the sign of a curse. Despite this, Violet grows up to be a beautiful and intelligent young woman, but her life is plagued by tragedy and misfortune. As a child, Violet is orphaned and sent to live with her cruel and abusive uncle, who mistreats her and tries to marry her off to a wealthy but unscrupulous suitor. After escaping from her uncle’s clutches, Violet becomes a governess and falls in love with a young artist named Claude, who is also haunted by a dark secret from his past. Together, Violet and Claude embark on a journey to uncover the truth about their respective curses and the mysterious forces that seem to be working against them. Along the way, they encounter a cast of colorful characters, including a gypsy fortune-teller, a reclusive scholar, and a vengeful rival who will stop at nothing to destroy them. Violet Davenant: Or The Blood-Marked Hand! is a gripping and suspenseful tale of love, betrayal, and redemption, set against the backdrop of Victorian England. With its vivid descriptions of the era’s customs, landscapes, and social hierarchies, it offers a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era, while also exploring universal themes of identity, destiny, and free will. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
