O autor, com base na sua experiência e observações, acredita que as comunidades rurais recentes testemunham a erosão das suas estruturas e valores socioeconómicos rústicos tradicionais e, ao fazê-lo, tiraram a natureza do seu eixo através da aplicação de tecnologia inadequada, da utilização de factores de produção prejudiciais, do esgotamento excessivo dos recursos naturais e da falta de uma agenda de desenvolvimento que se adeqúe às necessidades das comunidades rurais.
