Entre la Edad Media y el siglo XVII, los primeros viajeros europeos que abrieron caminos hacia los horizontes ignotos de Asia y China, empezando por Marco Polo, relatan sus fascinantes periplos dentro de una tradición bien consolidada: el libro de viajes. Comerciantes, embajadores, peregrinos o misioneros -curiosos empiristas 'avant la lettre' muchos de ellos- nos hacen partícipes del tesoro de sus peripecias a través de relatos precisos, rudos y magnéticos. Los viajeros dibujan al fresco sus hallazgos y a la vez pugnan por interpretar, en clave occidental, los nuevos mundos de un Oriente -para ellos y aún para nosotros- imprevisible e inabarcable. Los trabajos de este volumen plantean aproximaciones trasversales a lo que pudo suponer la aventura de escritura de estos libros de viajes -documentos ricos e inapreciables-, abordando temas que atañen a la historia de la literatura y a la historia social y de las mentalidades.
