In der Kunstgeschichte sind nur relativ wenige Maler bekannt, die nicht nur Zeichnungen, Gemälde und Fresken anfertigten, sondern auch über ihre Werke, ihre Technik, sich selbst und ihre Zeitgenossen oder allgemein über ihre 'Kunstphilosophie' sprachen und schrieben. Zu den berühmtesten gehören Leonardo da Vinci und Delacroix, aber es gibt auch einige 'Moderne' wie Maurice Denis und Paul Signac. Auch Vasarely gehörte zu den Künstlern, die ihr ganzes Leben lang 'Schreibwünsche' hatten. Sprachliche, um nicht zu sagen lexikografische Bedenken begleiteten seine künstlerischen Aktivitäten seit seiner Ankunft in Paris im Jahr 1930. Als Ikonoklast veränderte er das semantische Verständnis von auf den ersten Blick so 'banalen' Wörtern wie kreieren, Schöpfer oder Schöpfung, ganz zu schweigen von Ausdrücken wie plastisches Alphabet, polychrome Stadt, planetarische Folklore oder plastische Einheit. Diese werden - obwohl sie Wörter umfassen, die für sich genommen keine neuen Bedeutungen haben - in seinem Gebrauch mit nie zuvor gesehenen Bedeutungen gefüllt werden.
