Il s’agit d’une identité graphique obtenue par une personne au moyen de symboles ou de lettres qui peuvent ou non correspondre à son nom et qui confèrent une authenticité au document. La signature est généralement l’acte d’écriture le plus courant d’une personne. Il s’agit en outre d’un acte largement habituel. Comme il n’existe pas de règles pour concevoir et produire des signatures, celles-ci sont fortement individualisées en fonction de la conception mentale de chaque personne. Souvent formulée délibérément, la signature d’une personne sert de 'MARQUE COMMERCIALE'. La signature peut être écrite sous forme de formes illisibles ou de séries de lettres clairement déchiffrables qui épellent distinctement le nom de la personne. Dans de nombreux cas, elle ne ressemble pas du tout au nom de l’auteur, mais il s’agit simplement de marques d’identification. Dans tous les cas, leur construction et leur exécution sont relativement stables et leurs caractéristiques sont produites plus ou moins inconsciemment. En raison de leur répétition, les traits d’écriture et la formation qui composent la signature d’une personne sont généralement cohérents, même sur de longues périodes.
