Nas últimas décadas, o mundo testemunhou avanços nos pagamentos eletrónicos. Desde cartões de débito, também considerados cheques eletrónicos, passando por cartões de crédito, vistos como empréstimos eletrónicos, até carteiras eletrónicas, essencialmente uma forma de dinheiro eletrónico, consumidores, comerciantes e emissores começaram a aproveitar os avanços na tecnologia das telecomunicações para facilitar os pagamentos usando esses meios. No entanto, embora no início da década de 1990 alguns analistas de pagamentos tenham sugerido que os cartões inteligentes, particularmente aqueles com recursos de carteira eletrónica, levariam a uma sociedade sem dinheiro, isso não aconteceu. Este livro tem como objetivo fornecer razões para essa lenta adoção das carteiras eletrónicas, comparando a adoção pelos utilizadores na Nigéria e no Reino Unido para chegar aos fatores salientes responsáveis por desencorajar a adoção dessa tecnologia. Por fim, utilizando dados qualitativos e quantitativos de uma amostra diversificada dos dois países, chego a conclusões sobre qual dos países adotaria mais facilmente este método de pagamento.
