Una delle tecniche utilizzate dai dermatologi per diagnosticare i melanomi è una modalità di imaging chiamata dermoscopia. La lesione cutanea viene ispezionata utilizzando un dispositivo di ingrandimento e una fonte di luce. Questa tecnica consente al dermatologo di osservare strutture sottocutanee che altrimenti sarebbero invisibili. Tuttavia, l’uso della dermoscopia non è semplice e richiede anni di pratica. Inoltre, la diagnosi è sempre soggettiva e difficile da riprodurre. Pertanto, è necessario sviluppare metodi automatici che aiutino i dermatologi a fornire diagnosi più affidabili.
