La necessità di misure psicologiche che colgano appieno le dinamiche e le vicissitudini delle risposte allo stress traumatico da combattimento è urgente, dal momento che un numero crescente di soldati di ritorno da aree devastate dalla guerra deve essere valutato per la diagnosi di PTSD. Nonostante i recenti progressi nella ricerca sulla valutazione del PTSD, continua ad esserci una controversia se sia più utile l’MMPI o il Rorschach per determinare la presenza del PTSD. La presente analisi comparativa della letteratura di ricerca valuterà attentamente gli studi empirici controllati che hanno utilizzato misure psicometriche come l’MMPI/2 e il Rorschach per identificare il PTSD nei veterani del Vietnam. Questa analisi è guidata dalla scarsità di dati comparativi relativi a strumenti oggettivi e proiettivi standardizzati per valutare il PTSD legato al combattimento. Strumenti psicologici in grado di identificare in modo affidabile il PTSD il prima possibile dopo il ritorno dalle zone di guerra contribuirebbero a interventi più precoci ed efficaci in questo settore.
